How To Upload iPhoto To Picasa

Last updated:

If you want to upload your iPhoto albums to Picasa, the Picasa Web Albums Uploader for iPhoto plugin still allows you to do so very easily. Although Google has stopped officially supporting the plugin, it still works with OS X 10.8 up to the latest version of iPhoto 11 and you can download it below. If you’re using OS X 10.9 Mavericks or OS X 10.10 Yosemite, there is a separate uploader app instead of a plugin with slightly different installation instructions which you’ll also find in this article. The plugin and uploader allow you to upload iPhoto to Picasaweb which is useful for those users that prefer to use iPhoto for managing photos on their Mac but use Picasaweb’s generous free online storage allowance to share photos online.

How To Upload From iPhoto To Picasa

1. Close iPhoto and install the Google Picasa Web Albums Uploader for iPhoto.

If it doesn’t, select the tab Existing Album and it will prompt you to enter your details. If it still doesn’t prompt you, just click on Sign In. The Picasa Web Albums Uploader for iPhoto will then retrieve your current albums or allow you to create new ones. You can also select whether you want the album to be Public or Private and configure whether you want the photos to upload quickly if you’re in a hurry, or in maximum resolution if you’re not.

This still works for uploading from iPhoto 11 to Picasa, although it’s possible that in future updates of iPhoto, it may stop working. Note also that although Google has made a”hidden” Picasaweb to encourage people to use Google+ to view and share photos instead. However, you can still force your web browser to view Picasaweb rather than Google+ using the following URL: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/myphotos?noredirect=1

Why Upload iPhoto Albums To Picasa Anyway?

A quick note on why you might want to upload iPhoto photos to Picasaweb…Having used both Picasa and iPhoto for many years, we’re firmly in the iPhoto camp when it comes to managing photos on a Mac. iPhoto is slicker, smarter and allows you to do considerably more with your photos. The slideshows are much slicker than Picasa giving you various slick presentation styles and soundtracks to choose from (or the option to add your own). We also really like the way that iPhoto allows you to create calendars, printed photo albums or order prints. Sure, you can do some of this with Picasa but iPhoto makes the whole process so much more creative and slicker. This is no surprise since Picasa was originally designed for Windows whereas iPhoto has always been developed specifically by Apple for Mac.

However, the fact that for many years, Google has offered a very generous free allowance of several GB (and much more for a small annual fee) to upload photos, it’s natural that some people may still prefer to use Picasaweb to share and organize their photos online especially if they have a large collection already online but have recently switched to Mac.
