There’s no FreshMail free trial because you can start using it for free for up to 1000 emails or 500 subscribers. After that, pricing starts at a modest $12 per month for up to 1000 subscribers or you can Pay As You Go starting at $28 for 5000 emails. Note that no credit card or contract is required to use the free version of FreshMail.
SendinBlue is quite a basic but effective email marketing solution and a good option if you don’t need lots of features or want to spend too much time learning how to use it. SendinBlue is certainly one of the cheapest email marketing software solutions we’ve seen and offers a generous free service for up to 9,000 emails per month. Plans then start at a very competitive $7.37 for up to 40,000 emails per month going up to $66 per month for up to 120,000 emails per month. Note that in the free version and more basic plans, there’s quite a bit of SendinBlue branding included in mail outs and reporting tools are limited. The email designer is an easy to use drag and drop editor although templates are far more limited in SendinBlue than the other services featured here. You can however use your own HTML code to create customized templates instead. If you’re going to be targeting mobile users, make sure you use the Responsive Design Builder.
You can preview mails before you send them and specify the date that you want them sent on. SendinBlue also allows you to send SMS text messages instead of emails although you can’t trigger SMS messages depending on actions that recipients perform when they receive the mail. In fact the email marketing automation features are very limited compared to the other software featured so far. SendinBlue is integrated however with a few other platforms such as WordPress, Magento, PrestaShop, Drupal and WooCommerce. Contact Management is extremely well done on ConstantContact and allows you to import lists from Excel, Outlook, Salesforce and more.

Although GetResponse still doesn’t have a Mac desktop client, it has gradually evolved into a very complete and user friendly email marketing software out there for users on both Mac and PC. The reason for this is that GetResponse covers everything from mailouts and form creation to landing pages and webinars in one package. All within a very easy to use, thoughtfully designed interface which fits OS X perfectly. The other great thing about GetResponse is that it’s constantly being expanded and developed so features like marketing automation to trigger specific events based on customer behavior, form creation and webinars are all recent additions that you don’t find in other email marketing apps. These touches show that the developers clearly live and breathe email marketing and a lot of work has gone into keeping it ahead of the curve.
The main thing you look for in any email marketing program is the email blast software. GetResponse produces slick and professional mailouts with little effort via a WYSIWYG drag and drop interface. The email creator is one of the best we’ve used allowing you to create customized emails in minutes by simply choosing one of the many templates. You can then customize it easily by dragging and dropping elements onto the page – there’s no coding or HTML required although there is an HTML editor if you know what you’re doing. Inserting images is also considerably easier than on similar software because GetResponse automatically scales and resizes images. There are over 500 templates and 1000 copyright free images to get you started which you can edit and customize.
One of the most frustrating things when creating mailouts is making sure that they display properly in all the different types of email clients out there. To make sure that your emails display correctly in all types of email providers, GetResponse has a useful email preview feature that shows you how it looks it different online email services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail. To make sure your mailouts don’t go straight into the spam folder, GetResponse also warns you if your emails read a bit spammy by giving you a spam rating based on blacklisted keywords.

It’s a shame that GetResponse doesn’t have a Mac client but this is no reason not to use it on OS X. The web interface works perfectly well and it’s simply not possible to find an email program for Mac with this many features and ease of use.
Response Wise is a relative newcomer to email marketing but an impressive web based solution which you can try free for 30 days. Response Wise is aimed at beginners to online marketing so it’s very easy to use but also offers powerful analytical tools. Response Wide includes tools such as customizable HTML mailout templates, survey builders and landing pages to help promote your business. You can automate pretty much everything and even perform Split Testing to figure out which emails are most effective with your customers.
The customer service for Response Wise is free and generally excellent and they will also help you migrate data from your previous platform if you’re using one. The user guides are a bit limited – the video tutorials on the site are still missing but there are basic step-by-step guides to help you instead. The only other thing to be aware of is that Response Wise is entirely web based meaning data is not saved on your Mac. If you’d prefer to save customer data locally on your hard drive rather than in the cloud, then you may prefer one of the other options featured here. Pricing plans you can see below – you don’t have to pay anything until the free trial has ended and there’s no need to enter into contracts either. There are also other plans for up to 10,000 and up to 25,000 subscribers for big businesses.
Direct Mail is one of the most popular and best email marketing software for Mac available. It’s designed specifically for Macs so it looks great, it’s easy to use and is free for up to 50 mails per month with flexible pricing plans beyond that. If its templates you’re looking for, you also can’t do much better than Direct Mail which has lots of elegant and professional looking designs to choose from. Direct Mail also has some of the best email marketing templates for Mac you’ll find in any app. The templates are easy to use although customization is limited to things like the amount of columns, titles, text and tables you want to insert. If you know HTML though, you can create your own templates from scratch or you can import email marketing templates from Apple Mail, Mail Designer, MailChimp, Campaign Monitor or any HTML document.
Editing templates is really easy. Direct Mail uses a WYSIWYG interface so you can see your mailshots take shape as you edit them. Adding images is simply a case of dragging and dropping them into the interface and they are automatically optimized for Retina displays. The only issue you may have is resizing images to a size that looks good in the templates – it would be more convenient if Direct Mail resized images automatically as messing around trying to get them right takes more time that it should.

Direct Mail is perfect for those new to email marketing. Those that want full control over customization of templates might find it a bit limiting and the image handling could be better but as far as email marketing software on Mac goes, Direct Mail is one of the best for OS X.
MaxBulk Mailer has a desktop client for both Windows and Mac (so it’s perfect for those that work on teams on both platforms) and is aimed more at professionals and web designers who have some technical knowledge. MaxBulk Mailer is suitable for a range of marketing tasks from simply sending press releases and newsletters to price lists and sales promotions. MaxBulk Mailer doesn’t include any newsletter templates but it does support text and HTML formatted emails which you can then save as templates for frequent use. It also allows you to attach files and images to your mailouts.
There is an address list manager to manage recipients and there are no extra costs once you’ve made the initial $59.99 purchase no matter how many people you send to. For those that know what they’re doing with databases, there’s support for mySQL, postgreSQL and ODBC databases. Technical knowledge isn’t required though – MaxBulk Mailer is generally very easy to use and you can check the extensive user manual to see how to get started publishing your first newsletter. The only slightly technical part is setting-up email configurations but you can do this using Gmail quite easily using these mail configuration instructions. Note that if your email list is currently in Excel format, you can’t import them into MaxBulk Mailer in XLS format but you can convert them into text format first or copy them in from the clipboard.

It’s made by the same developers as GroupMail for Windows which counts the BBC, Adobe and Fulitsu amongst its customers. Hoolie is aimed mainly at those that need a simple but elegant way to send newsletters and uses a What You See IS What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface that means you don’t have to mess around with HTML to format your mails unless you want to. Although Hoolie doesn’t import contact lists from Excel, it is integrated with your Mac’s Address Book so if your customers are already in there, it can import them instantly. Your contacts aren’t saved online anywhere either – they remain on your Mac so as long as your Mac is secure, there’s less risk of them being hacked online. There are no limits or monthly costs – simply buy the app from the Mac App Store and off you go.

Like ConstantContact, Vertical Response is a web based email and social media marketing platform that’s easy enough for anyone to use. You can drag and drop images and text into emails and the templates are arguably even more attractive than ConstantContact. Vertical Response is integrated with social media such as Twitter and Facebook and includes easy to use tracking tools to see the reach of your campaigns. Vertical Response produces very professional results with very little know-how and has a buzzing online community of users to help you in case of problems. Vertical Response is free for up to 1000 contacts and 4000 emails per month but there are also pay as you go and monthly payment plans.
Sendblaster is a popular bulk email software for Windows although you can only run it on Mac using Parallels. Parallels allows you to run Windows on a Mac and therefore install Sendblaster as if you were using a PC.
Once installed, Sendblaster works exactly the same as if you were using a PC including the message editor, contact list manager and newsletter mailing via your SMTP server via the turboSMTP wizard.
Sendblaster is available both in Free and Pro edition. The only thing to bear in mind with a web based service like MailChimp is that your subscriber base and mailouts are saved online, rather than on your Mac. Overall, MailChimp is a very accomplished e-marketing tool suitable for a wide range of abilities and needs.
PhpList is an open source email marketing software for Mac which is very powerful although it’s not very suitable for beginners. PhpList is open source as the creators take privacy very seriously and don’t store any of your data online. Everything is stored on your Mac and you can extend the functionality of PhpList with different add-ons and templates . PhpList looks very basic and is definitely designed with programmers or those with technical know-how but if you can master it, it’s a very secure and powerful free email blast software for Mac. Because PhpList is open source, it’s completely free to use although you can pay for subscriber plans ranging from $8 per month for 500 subscribers up to $850 per month for 300,000 subscribers on the Standard Plan.

EMailCampaign hasn’t been updated in a long time and users that have purchased it report problems getting any response from the developer over bugs or support. EmailCampaign was one of the first truly dedicated email marketing software for Mac programs but there are definitely better options available nowadays.
MacMass Mailer ($97)
MacMass Mailer is a bare bones but powerful email marketing for mac solution which is aimed those with some technical knowledge. There’s no glossy interface but there are tutorials. MacMass Mailer is a one man operation and hasn’t been developed much over the past 5 years so don’t expect much support. The website is quite hard sell but there’s a video showing you MacMass Mailer in action.
Mailings used to be a cheap and cheerful email marketing software for Macs but unfortunately has gone downhill somewhat. It seems that the developer has all but abandoned development of it since OS X 10.6 as it doesn’t even support OS X 10.9 Mavericks or above. Finally, if you’re not sure if you want a Cloud solution and want a Mac desktop email marketing client, Direct Mail is a superb middle ground because not only in the web version good, but it also has the Mac desktop app if you want it. It’s just a shame about the image resizing issue with Direct Mail which can become frustrating unless you’re a whizz with image editing and formatting.
