Effective email marketing is essential to drive sales to your business so we’ve taken a look at the best email marketing software for Mac in 2018. Platforms such as the excellent ActiveCampaign work on both Mac and PC so many of these reviews are relevant to both macOS and Windows users. Here then is the definitive selection of the best bulk email software for Mac users in order of ranking.
When it comes to email marketing, Active Campaign is about as good as it gets for Mac users. Not only is it clearly well thought-out and easy to use, but it looks like an application that was designed for macOS. Active Campaign is a highly professional online email marketing software that makes it remarkably easy to create attractive email marketing campaigns with mimimal effort.
The email editor in ActiveCampaign is an easy to use WYSIWYG editor that allows you to drag and drop text and images and customize things like fonts, titles and colors. There are many themed templates to speed things up and all are optimized for mobile devices too. You can of course manually modify HTML and CSS if you know what you’re doing.
Active Campaign is particularly good at Marketing Automation i.e. automating marketing channels using personal and behavioral data about contacts meaning less work for you and more targeted campaigns to improve conversions. Active Campaign includes its own Sales and CRM Management tools to help bring everything together and manage everything under one app. However, if you want to use your existing CRM solution, Active Campaign integrates with most major CRM software plus e-commerce sites, accounting apps and payment systems.
You can import contacts from Excel and other email marketing apps and the contact management system is well designed allowing you to see all recent activity with a particular person or client.
One really neat feature is the ability to see exactly what contacts have clicked on such as “Buy Now” or “Subscribe” buttons in your email blasts. In fact the marketing automation features in Active Campaign are easily the best in any email marketing software. You can very quickly create sequences of actions or emails based on contact & behavioral data such as trigger follow-up emails based on your contacts actions and behaviors on your site or mail outs. You can even trigger SMS texts to recipients based on their actions when opening your mail outs.
The reporting features in Active Campaign aren’t quite as detailed as we’d like but there’s still enough data there to give you the essentials such as open, click, forward and unsubscribe trends. One nice feature is the ability to see a map of the world and watch where and how your recipients are interacting with mail outs in real time.
Like almost all marketing software on Mac, pricing on Active Campaign depends on the number of recipients you’re sending to. If you’ve got less than 500 contacts, Active Campaign Lite costs just $9 per month which is one of the cheapest deals out there considering what’s included. For that you get unlimited sending, email marketing, newsletter sending and marketing automation for up to 3 users.
The Plus plan is aimed at small businesses and starts at $55 per month but includes several features essential to small companies including support for up to 25 users, CRM and sales automation, contact & lead scoring, custom domains and custom branding. For large Enterprises and businesses, the Professional plan costs $129 per month and includes all of the above plus unlimited users, a custom mailserver domain, dedicated account rep, in-depth onboarding and uptime SLA. Note that with all plans, you get a 15% discount if you pay up front annually rather than monthly.
Overall Active Campaign is still our top email marketing app for Mac with the best marketing automation tools you’ll get in any similar software for the price. You can try Active Campaign for free with no credit card required to judge for yourself.
AWeber is easily one of the most powerful, slickest and best value online email marketing software available for both Mac and PC users. AWeber has been around since 1998 and is one of the original email marketing software developers. In particular, it was one of the original email marketing automation designers meaning they’ve got years of experience when it comes to automating your marketing campaigns to make them more targeted with little effort on your part. If you like to have full control over your campaigns on the move too, the AWeber mobile app is also arguably the best we’ve seen in an email marketing software.
Like with all the best email marketing software, AWeber is packed with professional templates based on different themes but the quality in AWeber is particularly high.
AWeber is fully integrated with platforms such as Facebook, WordPress, PayPal and LeadPages making it easy to combine your marketing plans with the most popular methods of promotion and payment. Facebook integration is excellent allowing you to add email sign-ups to Facebook Pages with ease.
Email automation, known as “Campaigns” in AWeber, is probably one of the software’s strongest features and helps build stronger customer relationships and more targeted campaigns. AWeber will trigger follow-up emails, SMS messages and other actions depending on how you want to configure it meaning you don’t have to manually go through your reports and then follow-up afterwards. When dealing with thousands of subscribers, this is incredibly useful and time saving. For instance you can setup a Welcome Campaign for new subscribers and then trigger Educational and Sales Campaigns afterwards depending on the response and actions of your contacts. The way AWeber handles this is the easiest we’ve seen in an email marketing platform – you simply drag and drop actions and order them in the priority you want them to happen.
The amount of video tutorials in AWeber is way ahead of most other email marketing software providers and they’re refreshingly clear, to the point and easy to follow. There are lots of useful case studies too which provide examples of AWeber users that have successfully increased their conversion rates, email subscriber and sales. In fact, AWeber provides a lot of very useful information on email marketing for free including an ebook on Growing Your Business with Email Marketing.
The other nice thing about AWeber is that they’re always adding new features to it. The most recent for example is the Curate mobile app which allows you to gather useful information from across the web and automatically format it into a professional looking newsletter. This makes it much faster to put together a professional newsletter meaning you can keep in touch with your clients or subscribers more regularly. The only slight drawback is that AWeber branding appears quite heavily on the newsletters you send out although it makes the whole process much easier. In fact, the mobile tracking and control features are excellent in AWeber with both an excellent iOS and Android app to help manage email campaigns on the move. Note that you can’t actually create email campaigns via the AWeber mobile app – most email marketing apps only allow you to track stats and data.
It’s clear to see that in the two decades it has been going, AWeber has covered all possible angles of email marketing. The all round presentation of the software from the interface, to the user videos and helpful marketing tip guides is both professional and genuinely helpful. You can try a 30 day free trial of AWeber to judge for yourself.
Until August 31st 2017, you also get a few added bonuses for free including:
- A free email marketing webinar worth $145 with promo code AWAUG17
- 4 email copy templates
- 6 email marketing video lessons
- 44 articles and tools on email marketing
- 6 lesson handouts
FreshMail is very much focused on creating impressive emails and newsletters with a powerful design editor and lots of glitzy templates. In fact there are over 150 FreshMail templates all with tasteful designs and the ability to customize them exactly how you want with the FreshMail designer or import your own HTML designs. In fact, when it comes to design, FreshMail is probably the slickest we’ve seen and even provides successful newsletter idea examples from sites such as The Guardian, Dolce & Gabbana and Lonely Planet etc.
FreshMail features a few nice unique features such as the ability to organize promotions via barcodes that users can use in retail stores making it an ideal email marketing software for retailers and shops.
You can import contacts in .csv or .xls format and upload contacts from Google, Basecamp and a few other online services. FreshMail can even detect and remove duplicate contacts once they are imported. Like most of the best email marketing software for Mac, you can track the activities, clicks and actions of your contacts easily.
There are plenty of FreshMail video tutorials to help you get started and detailed How To guides if you get stuck. Overall, FreshMail is easily the most design oriented email marketing software we’ve seen although it doesn’t have the more advanced reporting features, automated marketing and mobile app access that most other email marketing software here does.
There’s no FreshMail free trial because you can start using it for free for up to 1000 emails or 500 subscribers. After that, pricing starts at a modest $12 per month for up to 1000 subscribers or you can Pay As You Go starting at $28 for 5000 emails. Note that no credit card or contract is required to use the free version of FreshMail.
SendinBlue is quite a basic but effective email marketing solution and a good option if you don’t need lots of features or want to spend too much time learning how to use it. SendinBlue is certainly one of the cheapest email marketing software solutions we’ve seen and offers a generous free service for up to 9,000 emails per month. Plans then start at a very competitive $7.37 for up to 40,000 emails per month going up to $66 per month for up to 120,000 emails per month. Note that in the free version and more basic plans, there’s quite a bit of SendinBlue branding included in mail outs and reporting tools are limited. The email designer is an easy to use drag and drop editor although templates are far more limited in SendinBlue than the other services featured here. You can however use your own HTML code to create customized templates instead. If you’re going to be targeting mobile users, make sure you use the Responsive Design Builder.
You can preview mails before you send them and specify the date that you want them sent on. SendinBlue also allows you to send SMS text messages instead of emails although you can’t trigger SMS messages depending on actions that recipients perform when they receive the mail. In fact the email marketing automation features are very limited compared to the other software featured so far. SendinBlue is integrated however with a few other platforms such as WordPress, Magento, PrestaShop, Drupal and WooCommerce. There’s no SnedinBlue free trial because you can send up to 9000 emails for free with no credit card or contracts required.
ConstantContact is a web based email campaign software for Mac which offers a 60 day free trial and is easy enough for anyone to use. There’s nothing to download and nothing to install on your Mac. Contact Management is extremely well done on ConstantContact and allows you to import lists from Excel, Outlook, Salesforce and more.
There’s an excellent choice of professional templates on ConstantContact which you can customize by simply dragging and dropping images and text boxes.
If you sign-up for the Email Plus package, you can connect your campaigns to Facebook and other social media. Because ConstantContact is web based, you can also edit your email campaigns on the move. ConstantContact is an excellent easy to use mass email marketing software with no software required. You can try ConstantContact free for 60 days and plans start at $20 per month.
Although GetResponse still doesn’t have a Mac desktop client, it has gradually evolved into a very complete and user friendly email marketing software out there for users on both Mac and PC. The reason for this is that GetResponse covers everything from mailouts and form creation to landing pages and webinars in one package. All within a very easy to use, thoughtfully designed interface which fits OS X perfectly. The other great thing about GetResponse is that it’s constantly being expanded and developed so features like marketing automation to trigger specific events based on customer behavior, form creation and webinars are all recent additions that you don’t find in other email marketing apps. These touches show that the developers clearly live and breathe email marketing and a lot of work has gone into keeping it ahead of the curve.
The main thing you look for in any email marketing program is the email blast software. GetResponse produces slick and professional mailouts with little effort via a WYSIWYG drag and drop interface. The email creator is one of the best we’ve used allowing you to create customized emails in minutes by simply choosing one of the many templates. You can then customize it easily by dragging and dropping elements onto the page – there’s no coding or HTML required although there is an HTML editor if you know what you’re doing. Inserting images is also considerably easier than on similar software because GetResponse automatically scales and resizes images. There are over 500 templates and 1000 copyright free images to get you started which you can edit and customize.
One of the most frustrating things when creating mailouts is making sure that they display properly in all the different types of email clients out there. To make sure that your emails display correctly in all types of email providers, GetResponse has a useful email preview feature that shows you how it looks it different online email services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail. To make sure your mailouts don’t go straight into the spam folder, GetResponse also warns you if your emails read a bit spammy by giving you a spam rating based on blacklisted keywords.
One of the best new features of GetResponse is the landing page creator. Landing pages are crucial in capturing customers and the landing page creator allows you to drag and drop elements onto a page to create them quickly. You can also create sales pages with Buy Now PayPal links on to convert visitors into paying customers.
If you’ve got a huge list of contacts, importing contacts is well implemented in GetResponse. You can import files (including Excel which surprisingly, not all email marketing programs do) in CSV, TXT, VCF, XLS, XLSX or ODS format. Alternatively, you can connect to third party services such as Google or Salesforce and automatically import your address book. GetResponse will even indicate which email addresses are currently valid and which are no longer working, blacklisted or invalid.
Finally, tracking the effectiveness of campaigns is just as important as creating them and GetResponse provides detailed analytics about campaigns to help you gauge reach, open rate, unsubscribe rate, complaint rate and CTR.
Unlike many online email marketing services, GetResponse doesn’t require your credit card details in order to start the 30 day free trial. Although you can only import a maximum of 250 contacts into the free trial, it’s enough to gauge the effectiveness of GetResponse. In terms of pricing, GetResponse is very competitive too. If you have up to 1000 subscribers, plans start at $15 per month ranging up to $165 per month for 10,000 subscribers. You can also get an 18% discount on GetResponse if you sign-up annually. If you run an enterprise or non-profit organization with over 100,000 subscribers, there are also special pricing plans starting at $799 per month. There are no contracts, no obligations and you can cancel anytime with GetResponse. There’s also a companion GetResponse iPhone app so that you can monitor and manage campaigns on the move.
It’s a shame that GetResponse doesn’t have a Mac client but this is no reason not to use it on OS X. The web interface works perfectly well and it’s simply not possible to find an email program for Mac with this many features and ease of use.
Response Wise is a relative newcomer to email marketing but an impressive web based solution which you can try free for 30 days. Response Wise is aimed at beginners to online marketing so it’s very easy to use but also offers powerful analytical tools. Response Wide includes tools such as customizable HTML mailout templates, survey builders and landing pages to help promote your business. You can automate pretty much everything and even perform Split Testing to figure out which emails are most effective with your customers.
The customer service for Response Wise is free and generally excellent and they will also help you migrate data from your previous platform if you’re using one. The user guides are a bit limited – the video tutorials on the site are still missing but there are basic step-by-step guides to help you instead. The only other thing to be aware of is that Response Wise is entirely web based meaning data is not saved on your Mac. If you’d prefer to save customer data locally on your hard drive rather than in the cloud, then you may prefer one of the other options featured here. Pricing plans you can see below – you don’t have to pay anything until the free trial has ended and there’s no need to enter into contracts either. There are also other plans for up to 10,000 and up to 25,000 subscribers for big businesses.
Direct Mail is one of the most popular and best email marketing software for Mac available. It’s designed specifically for Macs so it looks great, it’s easy to use and is free for up to 50 mails per month with flexible pricing plans beyond that. If its templates you’re looking for, you also can’t do much better than Direct Mail which has lots of elegant and professional looking designs to choose from. Direct Mail also has some of the best email marketing templates for Mac you’ll find in any app. The templates are easy to use although customization is limited to things like the amount of columns, titles, text and tables you want to insert. If you know HTML though, you can create your own templates from scratch or you can import email marketing templates from Apple Mail, Mail Designer, MailChimp, Campaign Monitor or any HTML document.
Editing templates is really easy. Direct Mail uses a WYSIWYG interface so you can see your mailshots take shape as you edit them. Adding images is simply a case of dragging and dropping them into the interface and they are automatically optimized for Retina displays. The only issue you may have is resizing images to a size that looks good in the templates – it would be more convenient if Direct Mail resized images automatically as messing around trying to get them right takes more time that it should.
Particularly useful in Direct Mail is the Email Preview feature which allows you to design test how your newsletter will look in 30 different email clients depending on the email account your customers are receiving in (such as Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Thunderbird etc). This helps avoid annoying formatting issues caused by different email providers which is quite common since they all handle images and text slightly differently.
Another useful feature is integration with Spam Assassin which warns you whether it could potentially be flagged as spam and this not get through or worse, get you and your company blacklisted. It will also warn you if there are any broken links in your emails. As regards Contacts, Direct Mail will also import contacts from major databases such as OS X Contacts, Daylite, Google Sheets, Outlook, FileMaker Pro. You can also importing from CSV and MySQL databases. If you use other CRM software on Mac, Direct Mail integrates with most major providers via Zapier including Slack, Salesforce and Shopify.
Finally, the tracking tools in Direct Mail are excellent, providing a clear overview of the opened and unopened rate with the top 5 most clicked links clearly visible.
You can also see where in the world you customers are and which states and countries you’ve penetrated best with your mailshots.
Reports can also be delivered to your iPhone via a free app called Stamps for Direct Mail. You can conveniently schedule or cancel deliveries of mail on the go – useful if you want to put a last minute block on your newsletter bulk mails.
The Direct Mail software itself is free from the Mac app store but if you need to send more than 50 mails per month, you can upgrade your quota from within the app. You can buy an unlimited or pay-as-you-go subscription. Depending on the number of bulk e-mails you want to send, Pay Per Email rates range from $30 for 1000 recipients to $850 for up to 100,000 recipients. The Unlimited Plan ranges from $15 a month for up to 500 subscribers a month up to $250 for up to 50,000 subscribers. The good thing is that whichever you choose, you’re not locked into a contract either – you can quit Direct Mail at any time and there’s a 30 day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.
Direct Mail is perfect for those new to email marketing. Those that want full control over customization of templates might find it a bit limiting and the image handling could be better but as far as email marketing software on Mac goes, Direct Mail is one of the best for OS X.
MaxBulk Mailer has a desktop client for both Windows and Mac (so it’s perfect for those that work on teams on both platforms) and is aimed more at professionals and web designers who have some technical knowledge. MaxBulk Mailer is suitable for a range of marketing tasks from simply sending press releases and newsletters to price lists and sales promotions. MaxBulk Mailer doesn’t include any newsletter templates but it does support text and HTML formatted emails which you can then save as templates for frequent use. It also allows you to attach files and images to your mailouts.
There is an address list manager to manage recipients and there are no extra costs once you’ve made the initial $59.99 purchase no matter how many people you send to. For those that know what they’re doing with databases, there’s support for mySQL, postgreSQL and ODBC databases. Technical knowledge isn’t required though – MaxBulk Mailer is generally very easy to use and you can check the extensive user manual to see how to get started publishing your first newsletter. The only slightly technical part is setting-up email configurations but you can do this using Gmail quite easily using these mail configuration instructions. Note that if your email list is currently in Excel format, you can’t import them into MaxBulk Mailer in XLS format but you can convert them into text format first or copy them in from the clipboard.
Hoolie is a slick email marketing software that’s designed specifically for OS X. It’s made by the same developers as GroupMail for Windows which counts the BBC, Adobe and Fulitsu amongst its customers. Hoolie is aimed mainly at those that need a simple but elegant way to send newsletters and uses a What You See IS What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface that means you don’t have to mess around with HTML to format your mails unless you want to. You can also use one of several ready made templates so that your mails look professional from the start. Although Hoolie doesn’t import contact lists from Excel, it is integrated with your Mac’s Address Book so if your customers are already in there, it can import them instantly. Your contacts aren’t saved online anywhere either – they remain on your Mac so as long as your Mac is secure, there’s less risk of them being hacked online. There are no limits or monthly costs – simply buy the app from the Mac App Store and off you go.
As the name suggests, Autopilot is all about automating as much of your email marketing campaigns as possible. Autopilot helps you create highly personlized emails, SMS texts and even in-app messages which should in turn return better conversion rates and reader loyalty.
Everything in Autopilot can be synced with most major CRM software on Mac or Google Analytics. Autopilot is highly sophisticated in how it tracks and organizes your clients including such things as Smart Segments to group users of similar values or demograpic and tools to help you perform A/B testing to improve your marketing strategies.
Of course, there’s a basic email composer which allows you to create professional mail outs although it doesn’t support dragging and dropping or resizing of images.
There’s integration with Facebook which notifies you of the exact link that someone has clicked on allowing you to turn anonymous clicks into leads or customers. Once they’re added to your contacts, the actions and activities of these users is automatically tracked by Autopilot.
Autopilot is a very well organized email marketing software for Mac users and is certainly gives you a high degree of control over automated marketing and capturing new contacts. It is considerably more focused on marketing automation than design though and doesn’t have the range of templates and email design flair that most of the marketing software featured here do.
Pricing for Autopilot starts at $20 for 1000 contacts or $40 a month for business users that need Salesforce integration, A/B split testing and segment.com integration.
If you don’t have the time or money to invest in a full time email marketing effort, then look no further than OutBoundEngine. OutBoundEngine might sound expensive but it’s a professional email marketing software with a difference. OutBoundEngine is a complete marketing solution that provides its own in-house copy writing, marketing design and tracking services. OutBoundEngine claims it sent around 102,500,00 emails on behalf of clients so it’s clear the team has some serious experience in effective email marketing that you simply can’t benefit from in other email marketing software. All marketing material is branded for your business and the OutBoundEngine team can produce material in just a few days after receiving logos and other assets from you.
This makes OutBoundEngine very different from other email marketing software and is obviously reflected in the significantly higher price compared to other options. However, it does mean you don’t have the the expense of employing your own large in-house marketing team (or any at all) and is definitely worth closer inspection, especially for small businesses. You’re also using an experienced team of writers and designers that specifically produce and target email marketing material and may therefore better equipped to produce mail outs that convert better than you’re own in-house team. There are many satisfied customers and businesses that testify that paying the extra money for an outsourced marketing solution like OutBound Engine has definitely been worth it so it clearly works for some. The fact that huge Real Estate companies such as Remax, Prudential and Century 21 use OutBound Engine says something about how cost effective it is.
The other unique thing about OutBoundEngine is that it provides specialized targeting for specific industries including Real Estate, Insurance, Financial Advisors, Mortgage Lenders, Wellness Services, Automotive, Beauty Salons, Legal, Home Services, Massage Therapy and other Promotional Services.
The result is well written highly targeted industry specific campaigns, attractive marketing material and a very attractive interface in which to view it all.
One of the most time consuming aspects of email marketing is tracking your campaigns. OutBoundEngine automates tracking of engagement and then identifying which customers or clients are ripe for conversion. OutBoundEngine tracks all of your mailouts and social media channels and alerts you to “warm” or “hot” leads that looks good for conversion.
One other nice thing we like about OutBoundEngine is that it allows you to setup and track your own referral program so that users and customers are encouraged to spread the word about your services.
Pricing for OutBoundEngine mainly depends on how many contacts you want to mail-out too. It starts at $179 per month for the Basic Plan for up to 300 contacts which includes branded content for your marketing campaign, two automated email campaigns per month, engagement tracking and support from the OutBoundEngine team whenever you need it. The Value plan is $229 per month and supports up to 1000 contacts and 30 social media posts per month. The Premium Plan costs $299 per month and supports up to 10,000 contacts plus the bonus of quarterly referral campaigns. OutBoundEngine can also provide quotes for specific cases, businesses and large enterprises. All of these plans are a lot more expensive than the average email marketing software but if it means you don’t have to spend time or money maintaining your own in-house marketing department or team, it more than pays for itself in the long run.
If you just want a fire and forget email marketing solution without the hassle of managing it, creating material or even tracking it, OutBoundEngine is a really unique and effective email marketing solution. The best thing to do is try a free demo of OutBoundEngine where they’ll ask for you a few details about your business and then send you a sample of the kind of material they can produce for you based on your business and branding.
Sendgeek is a really slick, user friendly online email marketing service that offers flexible pricing as your business grows. You can import contacts from Excel and in CSV format to Sendgeek as well as migrate your services from other ESP services. Sendgeek will also handle major migrations themselves and claim transfer rates of up to 100 million subscribers per hour. Sendgeek is entirely web based and has an easy to use WYSIWYG email composer with 70 templates, drag and drop functionality and a useful online image editor which helps you correctly resize and align images.
You can preview mails, set when you want mail-outs to be sent and insert dynamic content. Unfortunately, there’s no email client preview tool so it’s hard to know how your email will look like in all email providers. One nice feature of Sendgeek is real time reporting for those that can’t wait to see how their campaigns are doing – just log-on and you can see the effect of your mail shots within seconds of them being sent which is pretty cool. This includes data such as email open rates and breakdown, geo-location reporting and email application and device usage.
Sendgeek is also integrated with third party services such as Zapier, WordPress, Slack and Shopify. Pricing depends on how many subscribers you need to send to but starts at $14.40 per month for 500 recipients up to $2,632 for up to 350,000 recipients. They also cater for more recipients on request and there’s a 14 day free trial.
Like ConstantContact, Vertical Response is a web based email and social media marketing platform that’s easy enough for anyone to use. You can drag and drop images and text into emails and the templates are arguably even more attractive than ConstantContact. Vertical Response is integrated with social media such as Twitter and Facebook and includes easy to use tracking tools to see the reach of your campaigns. Vertical Response produces very professional results with very little know-how and has a buzzing online community of users to help you in case of problems. Vertical Response is free for up to 1000 contacts and 4000 emails per month but there are also pay as you go and monthly payment plans.
Sendblaster is a popular bulk email software for Windows although you can only run it on Mac using Parallels. Parallels allows you to run Windows on a Mac and therefore install Sendblaster as if you were using a PC.
Once installed, Sendblaster works exactly the same as if you were using a PC including the message editor, contact list manager and newsletter mailing via your SMTP server via the turboSMTP wizard.
Sendblaster is available both in Free and Pro edition. The Free edition is a good way to see if you like Sendblaster although for serious use, you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro edition because the free edition is limited to just 100 recipients as you can see from this Sendblaster Free v Pro comparison chart. If there are other Windows applications that you miss on our Mac, installing Sendblaster on Mac via Parallels is a good investment as you can then install any PC software on your Mac.
MailChimp is one of the most popular web based email marketing solutions out there although like most others, it’s not specifically designed for Mac. There’s no download but since it’s web based but it’s perfectly acceptable for Mac users that need a free solution with a very generous 12,000 email or 2000 subscriber limit. MailChimp is a highly accomplished email marketing tool with a template designer, subscriber manager and iPhone/Android tracking apps that are comparable with Direct Mail for Mac.
It’s got excellent tracking tools which show you subscription rate, opening percentages, click rate and other useful stats to help you improve your mailouts.
MailChimp can even recommend the optimum time for sending out mails based on your subscriber behavior and target other subscribers that may be interested in your content. MailChimp can also be integrated with CRM software on Mac such as Salesforce and Eventbrite or content management systems such as WordPress by going to “Integrations” within your MailChimp account.
MailChimp is free for 12,000 mails/2000 subscribers which is easily the most generous free deal on the market and there’s no need to give your credit card details in order to use it. If you need more power, there are monthly payments plans starting from $10+ per month for sending unlimited mails to 50,000 subscribers or $425+ per month if you’re a big business with heavy duty email marketing needs. The only thing to bear in mind with a web based service like MailChimp is that your subscriber base and mailouts are saved online, rather than on your Mac. Overall, MailChimp is a very accomplished e-marketing tool suitable for a wide range of abilities and needs.
PhpList is an open source email marketing software for Mac which is very powerful although it’s not very suitable for beginners. PhpList is open source as the creators take privacy very seriously and don’t store any of your data online. Everything is stored on your Mac and you can extend the functionality of PhpList with different add-ons and templates . PhpList looks very basic and is definitely designed with programmers or those with technical know-how but if you can master it, it’s a very secure and powerful free email blast software for Mac. Because PhpList is open source, it’s completely free to use although you can pay for subscriber plans ranging from $8 per month for 500 subscribers up to $850 per month for 300,000 subscribers on the Standard Plan.
Email Marketing Templates For Mac
One thing that Mac users lack when it comes to email marketing is the wide variety of templates that are available on Windows. Most email marketing templates for Mac come as part of the software options reviewed here and you can’t actually download standalone email marketing templates for Mac. Programs such as MailChimp offer extra HTML templates for but you need an extra application to install them which is only available for Windows. However, MailChimp does allow Mac users to design their own templates via Mail Designer for Mac which allows you to create professional looking templates without needing any knowledge of HTML.
Email Marketing Software To Avoid On Mac
There are a few other email marketing options on Mac that have been around for a while but have either been pretty much abandoned by the developers or don’t have a particularly good rep anymore. These are a few you should probably avoid when choosing which one to go for.
The only real advantage of EmailCampaign is that unlike most desktop email marketing software for Mac, it also works on older Macs. EMailCampaign works on OS X 10.3 Panther and above although as a result, the interface and features are a bit dated. However, you’re much better off using one of the web based email marketing software already featured here. It’s also necessary to have a knowledge of HTML if you want to design templates in EmailCampaign as the templates require HTML editing if you want to customize them. EMailCampaign hasn’t been updated in a long time and users that have purchased it report problems getting any response from the developer over bugs or support. EmailCampaign was one of the first truly dedicated email marketing software for Mac programs but there are definitely better options available nowadays.
MacMass Mailer is a bare bones but powerful email marketing for mac solution which is aimed those with some technical knowledge. There’s no glossy interface but there are tutorials. MacMass Mailer is a one man operation and hasn’t been developed much over the past 5 years so don’t expect much support. The website is quite hard sell but there’s a video showing you MacMass Mailer in action.
Mailings used to be a cheap and cheerful email marketing software for Macs but unfortunately has gone downhill somewhat. It seems that the developer has all but abandoned development of it since OS X 10.6 as it doesn’t even support OS X 10.9 Mavericks or above. There’s no online support or manual and many Mac users report problems getting a response out of the developers regarding bugs and issues they are having. Until development is resumed, our advice is to stay away from both the full version of Mailings ($24.99) and the Lite version ($9.99).
Email Marketing Software Tips
There’s a few things to be aware of before choosing the best email marketing software for you or “email blast software” as it is also sometimes known.
- Some vendors offer a free service for sending mail to a limited number of recipients which may be suitable for very small scale marketing efforts. However, these free versions sometimes include heavy branding by the vendor as it’s a way to promote their own service and brand to your subscribers. Usually if you upgrade to a paid subscription you can remove or limit this branding but make sure before you sign-up for any service that you’re comfortable with the amount of vendor branding on your marketing emails.
- The best email marketing software on the market is all web based but the good news is that almost all of them work well and look great on OS X. Most bulk email marketing software on Mac is also commercial i.e. requires payment or subscription. Usually this consists of two payments models – pay as you go or a monthly subscription (the latter being more common). Subscriptions can range anywhere from around $12-40 per month for the most basic plans depending on the number of emails you want to send or the number of subscribers you need to reach. The exception is OutBoundEngine which is basically an entirely outsourced email marketing solution which also writes, designs and tracks your email campaigns for you. Most email marketing software developers offer discounts if you pay for a subscription annually rather than monthly.
- Other than price, there a few things to bear in mind when choosing which marketing planning software to go for apart from the pricing plan. Support is something that is quite important with email marketing software especially if you’re dealing with thousands of email blasts that either aren’t formatting correctly or not being received for some reason. The best services feature Live Chat, Telephone and Email support so make sure to check this before subscribing. Others rely on user forums to help you find solutions yourself but this can be extremely frustrating if you’re dealing with mass mail outs.
- Make sure that the software you choose can import your contacts. Most decent services can import from Outlook, Excel, CSV, OS X Contacts etc. It’s also important to make sure that if you choose to leave the service, that you can export your contacts in a format that can be read by other marketing software so don’t forget to check this too. The same goes for unsubscribing users from your mailing list – make sure that the software enables users to easily unsubscribe otherwise you just end up getting a bed rep. The best email marketing services also allow you to setup auto-responders which can send mail to your users or subscribers on important dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, welcome emails and goodbye emails for unsubscribers.
- Finally, tracking your campaigns is essential to making sure that your email marketing campaigns are being effective. The best email marketing software for Mac allow you to see at a glance importing stats such as open rate, click through rate (CTR) rate, subscribe/unsubscribe numbers etc. Most of the most advanced marketing software can even trigger events based on the actions of users when they receive the mail such as send more tailored follow-ups, promotions and other marketing material (known as marketing automation). An increasing number also integrate with Google Analytics and CRM software for Mac such as Salesforce such as Mailchimp, GetResponse and Response Wise (see our guide to the best CRM software for Mac for more). OutBoundEngine does almost everything for you and alerts you to “warm” and “hot” contacts that are good bets for conversion which saves a lot of hassle and analysis.
- One final word of caution before using marketing software on OS X. Building a strong subscription base can be incredibly effective at increasing sales and many marketeers and website owners will tell you there’s nothing more powerful than a loyal email subscriber list when it comes to making conversions and sales. However, although bulk emailing software is an effective way of targeting large numbers of customers, it must be used following local anti-spamming laws otherwise it can do more harm to your business than good.
Anti-Spam Laws & Email Marketing Software
Using email marketing software aggressively can quickly earn you a reputation as a spammer among customers. Spamming (bombarding people with commercial e-mail) or sending Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) should be avoided at all costs and is even illegal in some countries. You should also only use e-mail marketing software to target customers who have willingly given you their e-mail address for commercial purposes. Harvesting e-mail addresses from the internet and spamming them may not only be illegal but will have a negative effect on your organizations reputation. And subscribers should also always be offered an “Opt-out” or “Unsubscribe” option in every mail out you send.
Note that bulk mailing can also result in your internet connection being suspended by your ISP. You should check with your email provider whether it supports bulk mailing – Gmail for example limits e-mail sending to 500 a day to prevent spamming. We hope this article helps you in promoting your business to a wider audience using your Mac and gets the most out of your marketing campaigns. Which one you choose largely depends on whether you are willing to go for a Cloud based or native OS X software solution and how much effort you want to put into creating and monitoring your email campaigns.
The best email marketing software for Mac is still web based, and you can’t get much better than ActiveCampaign for overall design, ease of use, value for money and ability to target and monitor campaigns. However all of AWeber, SendinBlue, Constant Contact, GetResponse and ResponseWise are very competitive solutions to AWeber and produce extremely professional mailouts. If you’re on a budget however, FreshMail offers a surprisingly good free and pay-as-you-go solution.
There’s no doubt that effective email marketing is a very time consuming and labour intensive job and although it’s more expensive than most of the top email marketing software for Mac, OutBoundEngine could save you precious time and money by outsourcing everything.
Finally, if you’re not sure if you want a Cloud solution and want a Mac desktop email marketing client, Direct Mail is a superb middle ground because not only in the web version good, but it also has the Mac desktop app if you want it. It’s just a shame about the image resizing issue with Direct Mail which can become frustrating unless you’re a whizz with image editing and formatting.
