Apple has released an update to macOS Sonoma which adds dual monitor support to the base level 14 inch M3 MacBook Pro.
The macOS Sonoma 14.6 update allows owners of the smallest M3 MacBook Proswith the base level chip to use dual monitor but only in “clamshell mode” which means with the lid closed.
The feature is already part of the 13 inch M3 MacBook Air released in March 2024 but until now, was not possible in the base level M3 MacBook Pro.
The update means the 14 inch M3 MacBook Pro now supports:
- One external display at 6K resolution when the lid is open
- Two external displays at 5K resolution at up to 60Hz with the lid closed
There are also workarounds to add multiple displays to base model Apple Silicon Macs that don’t require the update or clamshell mode.
There are also other security updates in the release.
