At CES 2025, LG has announced the first display to support Thunderbolt 5.
The new LG UltraFine 6K Monitor (Model 32U990A) is the first monitor to support Thunderbolt 5 connections on the latest M4 chip Macs such as the M4 Pro Mac Mini and M4 MacBook Pro.
Thunderbolt 5 can support speeds of up to 80Gbps when connected to a Thunderbolt 5 port with a special “Boost mode” extending this to 120Gbps.
This opens up the possibility of using 8k monitors with a Mac but most importantly it will prove stiff competition as a 6K alternative to Apple’s Studio Display.
LG’s excellent 5K 27 inch 27MD5KL-B UltraFine is already one of the most popular replacements for Apple’s display and the new 6K UltraFine is a step-up from that.
Even the look and design of the new 6K LG UltraFine is similar to both Apple’s Studio Display and Apple Pro XDR Display.
LG hasn’t announced a release date or pricing but something in the region of $2,000 would be a reasonable estimate.
Considering Apple’s Studio Display starts at $1,499 and the Pro XDR at $4,999 this would position it somewhere between them.
