macOS Ventura Released

Apple has released the latest version of macOS Ventura which you can now install via Software Update or the Mac App Store.

macOS 13 Ventura was first revealed by Apple at the WWDC in June 2022 along with the new M2 chip.

The name Ventura is taken from a Californian city in line with a tradition Apple started back with macOS Mavericks in 2013.

Because macOS Ventura is released at the same time worldwide, demand usually means that downloading the new operating system may be slow and you may encounter errors or failures when trying to install it in the first few hours of release.

Our advice is to wait a while after the initial release and to make sure that your most important apps are compatible with Ventura.

What’s New in macOS Ventura?

These are some of the highlights of the new version of macOS 13 Ventura.

  • Stage Manager: A new way to manage your desktop that’s similar to the old Spaces feature in macOS.
  • Continuity Camera: Allows you to use your iPhone as a webcam and Handoff a FaceTime call from an iPhone or iPad to your Mac. It also includes a new Desk View which displays both your face and your desk for business calls.
  • Improved Spotlight: A new Quick Look tool allows you to Preview files and search photos by details such as location, objects and people. Live Text also allows you to search text within images and videos. The new Spotlight will also allow you to open a new document directly within it without having to open a word processing app first.
  • Reminders: The new Reminders allows more categorization by time and save templates for creating Reminders in the future.
  • System Settings: This replaces System Preferences and brings macOS closer to iOS.
  • Ambient Sounds: You can now listen to relaxing Background noises including rain, ocean and stream.
  • Improved Gaming: Apple claims that all new Macs running macOS Ventura will be able to run AAA games due to improvements to Metal 3, MetalFX Upscaling and Fast Resource Loading APIs. There will however still be some games that won’t run on Mac because they’re Windows only in which case the only option is to run Windows on your Mac.
  • AirPod Controls: You’ll now be able to access AirPod settings in Ventura like you can in iOS.
  • Photo Duplicates: The Photos app will detect duplicates including in Hidden albums.

macOS Ventura App Updates

Apart from these new features there will also be updates to the look and functionality of some macOS apps including Safari, Mail, Messages, Weather and Clock.

The most notable and useful update will be the ability to cancel the sending of an email sent in Apple Mail during a certain time limit as well as scheduled sending of emails.

Messages on Mac will be similar to Messages in iOS in allowing you to edit a sent message and recover accidentally deleted messages.

Finally, Safari will replace Passwords with Passkeys which aren’t saved on a web server and are therefore more secure than the currently way Safari manages passwords.
