Core Apps: Almost Identical for Everyday Use
Both Mac and Windows versions of Microsoft 365 include:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- OneNote
For everyday tasks – documents, presentations, and basic spreadsheets – the experience is very similar on both the Mac and Windows versions.
You get:

So for most users, there’s little noticeable difference.

Missing Apps on Mac
The biggest gap is app availability.
The following apps are only available in the Windows version of Office/Microsoft 365:

If your work depends on these tools, then Microsoft 365 on Windows is essential and we’d strongly recommend running Windows on your Mac in a virtual machine.

Excel: Where Windows Still Dominates
Excel remains the biggest difference between the two products.
The Windows version of Excel has several advantages:
- Full VBA (macro) support
- More advanced data analysis tools
- Better support for Power Query and Power Pivot

On the Mac version of Excel:
- Some advanced features missing or simplified
- Complex macros may not run reliably
For finance, data analysis, or technical work, Windows is still the clear winner.
Automation, Macros & Add-ins
Automation is significantly better on the Windows version of Microsoft 365.

- You’re fully invested in Apple products
- You don’t rely on macros or automation
Choose Office for Windows if:
- You depend heavily on Excel
- You use macros, automation, or add-ins
- You need Access, Publisher, Project, or Visio
- You work in data-heavy, technical, or enterprise environments
Can You Use Windows Office on a Mac?
The good news is you can use the Windows version of Office on a Mac.
The best options are:
- Virtual machines (e.g. Parallels Desktop)
- Cloud-based Windows PCs (e.g. Windows 365)
